Solution Mixing / Neutralization Calculator mechanism
The inspectable method record for Solution Mixing / Neutralization Calculator, kept separate from implementation and qualification.
Model scope
The concentration-mixing equation is conditionally correct, but the instrument claim of computing a general resulting concentration or pH is underspecified. The catalog should require solute identity and compatibility for mixing, acid/base identities and stoichiometric coefficients for neutralization, and pKa/equilibrium data for weak systems. It should honestly label the pH mode as limited to a defined model such as strong monoprotic acid/strong monoprotic base, with an explicit 25 °C or user-supplied temperature assumption.
- C_final=(C1V1+C2V2)/(V1+V2) is valid only when both solutions contain the same conserved solute or analyte, concentrations use the same basis, and final volumes are treated as additive. It is not a general formula for combining arbitrary solutions.
- The description calls this a mass/mole balance, but the displayed equation is a mole balance; it does not account for density, mass fractions, volume contraction, reactions, precipitation, or dilution effects beyond additive volume.
- Comparing moles of H+ and OH- is sufficient for strong acid/strong base neutralization with known stoichiometry, but it is insufficient for weak acids or weak bases, polyprotic species, buffers, hydrolysis, or mixtures containing multiple acid-base equilibria.
- A resulting pH cannot be determined from only two volumes and concentrations unless acid/base identities, stoichiometry, strength assumptions, temperature, and relevant pKa or equilibrium constants are supplied. At equivalence, pH is not generally 7; that approximation applies to strong acid/strong base mixtures near 25 °C.
- The output description is ambiguous about whether final concentration means concentration of the original solute, leftover excess acid/base, total ionic concentration, or another species.
Units and conventions
- V1 and V2 must use the same volume unit within each calculation; the test vectors convert milliliters to liters before multiplying by molarity.
- C1 and C2 are molar concentrations in mol/L for the displayed mole-balance equation.
- Volumes are assumed additive and solution volume change on mixing is neglected.
- Neutralization vectors assume monoprotic strong HCl and strong NaOH with 1:1 stoichiometry.
- pH is defined as -log10([H+] in mol/L relative to the 1 mol/L standard state).
- The equivalence-point vector assumes 25 °C, Kw=1.00e-14, and neglects activity coefficients; under those assumptions [H+]=1.00e-7 M and pH=7.00.

}Failure boundary
- Division by zero occurs if V1+V2=0; reject zero or negative total volume.
- Unit mismatch, such as multiplying molarity by milliliters without converting to liters, creates a factor-of-1000 error.
- The neutralization calculation must reject or explicitly handle negative concentrations and negative volumes.
- pH calculation is undefined if an excess-reagent concentration is zero unless water autoionization or an appropriate equilibrium model is used.
- Using pH=-log10(excess concentration) for a weak acid/base, polyprotic species, buffer, or equivalence point can be materially wrong.
- Acid/base stoichiometric coefficients must be included; a generic H+ versus OH- comparison is not sufficient for species such as H2SO4, H3PO4, Ca(OH)2, or weak electrolytes.
- The implementation needs an explicit policy for non-additive volumes, activity corrections, temperature dependence of Kw, precipitation, gas evolution, and reactions other than neutralization.
